The Importance of Being on Time "Lost time is never found again." – Benjamin Franklin Being on time is something we all strive for. It's a simple concept but can sometimes be tough to achieve. For the sake of our children's success, it's a skill adults must strive to master and model every day. Modeling important behaviors teaches children how to be successful in the world. THANK YOU to ALL that have and are making school EVERYDAY ON TIME ALL DAY a PRIORITY. School begins at 8:30am Classes end at 3:30pm. Dismissal begins at 3:35pm. We will send children to your vehicles at dismissal - thank you. Reminder: Learners that are late and picked up early are absent from school. Think on how this daily practice can become a lifelong habit for your child.

Attendance matters Being present in school every day matters. In addition to chronic absenteeism predicting low academic success, it also predicts which students may eventually drop out of school. Being chronically absent from school makes it hard for a student to keep up with the pace at which they are expected to learn and grow, causing that student to fall behind. Students who are chronically absent also miss out on opportunities to build friendships at school, become active in their school community and pursue future career interests.

Westside is excited to have Mrs. Hillestad trained as our Project Lead the Way - STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) Educator within our Enrichment-Specials schedule for the 2023-24 school year. PLTW Launch Students Learn Through Exploration and Discovery. Young learners are naturally wired for discovery. PLTW Launch is designed with activities that let them see what they can be and build skills to discover what they can do. Students are immersed in hands-on activities, projects, and problems that build upon each other and relate to the real world. They experience integrated learning that blends computer science, engineering, biomedical science, and more. Throughout the modules, even the youngest learners apply their math and English Language Arts (ELA) skills, learn science to standards, and adopt skills that are foundational across disciplines. This year 2nd grade is learning one module with Mrs. Hillestad - Dr. Moen observed a 2nd grade seeking opportunities to turn and talk about the lesson!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ALL LEARNERS ON TIME AT SCHOOL ALL DAY EVERYDAY! Children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school. Chronic absenteeism is a serious problem in South Dakota. Chronic absenteeism is when a student misses 10% or more of the school year. That’s only two days a month – and it adds up. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ALL LEARNERS ON TIME AT SCHOOL ALL DAY EVERYDAY!
